Simbers18's review of Sonic Frontiers.

I have never really had an emotional roller coaster experience with a game but this is certainly one of them. Started out strong with the new mechanics and the short and sweet time trials and puzzles to unlock the map as well as progression seemingly being pretty quick which I believe a good thing to be in a sonic game. However, it all grinded to a halt when I reached the third map of five. I had not realised that it was going to be the same thing over and over and over and over and over again. The third map really brought down my experience of this game. Usually there are treasure icons spread throughout each island but the third map gets lazy and makes you use them for traversal. These are not optional as the rails and speed boosters get you to your destination 1000 times quicker. So having to use a mechanic to unlock them every single time is a chore. However what this game does extremely well in my opinion is the Super Sonic sections. Each time you play as Super Sonic you feel soo powerful and the way you move around and how the game frames it feels like a DBZ fight which is very cool to play. Although, one more thing that bugged me (which I could go on for a while but I won’t) is the progression with your speed. At the end of the game I was at level 70/99 for speed and in terms of running on the ground nothing had changed to my previous speed level of 39 (I want to give the benefit of the doubt and say that the developers thought about how friction would interact with how fast sonic would be traveling however when he’s going downhill he keeps the same speed and doesn’t speed up which is mind boggling). But to end on a good note, the way in which you unlocked the map for the rail grinding made traversal heaps quicker and unlocking the map felt satisfying. Overall, I’d say only play this game if you’re a true sonic fan cause the story is garbage too.
