3.5/5 ★ – SimonUnger's review of Dredge.
The first few hours of Dredge are fantastic, presenting you with a vast and mysterious ocean to explore, while warning you that there are terrors lurking just out of sight. The gameplay is simple but addictive, and I had a great time all the way through the end of the story. After you return to finish the side quests though, you realize how much of the game is surface-level (excuse the ocean pun). Nearly every side quest plays the same way, and some are so transactional it’s almost insulting. After a few upgrades to your boat and a bit of exploring you’ll also find that those terrors the game keeps warning you about are pretty infrequent, highly telegraphed and easy to avoid entirely. In the twenty hours or so that I’ve played, I’ve only had about three or four run ins with any sea monsters. Definitely a game worth playing, but don’t be surprised at how quickly you run out things to do.
