3.5/5 ★ – Sir_ParvisJakester's review of The Callisto Protocol.
The Callisto Protocol was one of my most anticipated final game releases of 2022 and was admittedly disheartened to read and hear the lukewarm to mediocre impressions of it. I knew I would be playing it either way to formulate my own opinion and now that I’ve beaten it, I can definitely relate to those same impressions. Positives: the game is absolutely stunning and highly cinematic for its horror genre roots. Negatives: it doesn’t feel complete and the combat elements are problematic, even for the easiest difficulty are some encounters pretty rough.
With that being said, I ended up scoring Callisto on the slightly higher end of the review scale because there is still entertainment to be had exploring Black Iron Prison and uncovering its disturbing secrets. I hated entering shadowy dark rooms and knowing the jump scares were coming, making the experience work really well in that aspect. Striking Distance Studios have a lot of potential akin to Ember Labs with their debut of Kena: Bridge of Spirits; whatever they have coming next, it will guaranteed be an absolute great time and vast improvement of their original release.
