4/5 ★ – SlashStriker's review of Before Your Eyes.

Before Your Eyes is a adventure game controlled through eye tracking which was developed by GoodbyeWorld and published by Skybound. It is available on PC using your webcam, phones using their integrated cameras via Netflix Games and on PSVR2. Through the game you step into the ‘eyes’ of Benny, who has been asked to recall his entire life by a ferryman tasked with taking Benny to the afterlife. That’s right, Benny is dead, and over the following 2-3 hour story Benny’s life will be revealed to you one emotional gut-punch at a time. Gameplay consists of visually exploring environments starting from Benny’s early childhood. You will interact with objects by looking at them and blinking, hold your eyes closed to focus in on sounds around you, and many scenes will change when you blink outside of these interactable instances. The game is structured in such a way to ensure if you do blink too often you will not miss critical information. The game specifically asks the player not to force themselves to keep their eyes open, which I also personally recommend based on my experience. Before Your Eyes’ environments are simple, but vibrant and well constructed. There are ingenious environmental visibility mechanics to highlight key objects without explicitly pointing to them and saying “look at this!” Sound design is also top notch, highlighting ambient noises to better ground the player in the moment being presented. Voice acting is very clean and consistent throughout. I would highly recommend everyone try this game, including those who tend to avoid these kinds of entirely story-based titles. Don’t let the eye tracking gimmick scare you away, this is a story you want to experience. If at all possible I would HIGHLY recommend avoiding spoilers for this game. I was spoiled to a major twist before playing which is ultimately why I couldn’t rate it higher for my personal experience. I was waiting for the shoe to drop, which definitely took away from the experience the devs intended I played this game on my iPhone as part of my Netflix subscription.
