4.5/5 ★ – Slayaz12's review of art of rally.
This game is super chill and relaxing. You just have to play it for like 20-30 hours for it to be that way.
I really like the handling model, but totally understand why it's controversial and not for everyone. It's not a realistic simulator, but it doesn't provide an arcadey experience either.
I think what feels off for a lot of people is weight transfer. The weight of the car can be used to shift the car around the stage. (Similar to a pendulum) However, this is only the left and right motion of the car. In a real car the balance of weight on the front and rear tires while accelerating and braking greatly affects handling. This up and down motion is not modeled in the game.
While this may trip up some experienced racers, I think realizing this and spending time getting used to the handling isn't too bad. Once you get it down you can pretty much relax and let muscle memory take over as unlike other rally games, the bird's eye view allows you to see well ahead of you and gives you lots of time to react.
During the campaign you'll come across lots of rainy stages. I think the wet physics of this game straight up suck and are over exaggerated. While I just praised the game's physics, all the wet stages feel like driving through a swamp.
My favorite thing to do is drive the ae86 up and down the tarmac mountain stages in Japan and drift around like I'm Takami from Initial D.
