5/5 ★ – SlyLink's review of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence.
Deadly Silence to me is the best way to play the original Resident Evil. I find it amazing that this game even exists, considering the Resident Evil Remake came out on the GameCube in 2002, and is often cited as the best RE, the best survival horror and a perfect 10/10 game by fans of the series and almost trumps the original in every way. Jump forward to 2006 and a port of the original is coming to the Nintendo DS, and I am so happy it did.
Being a PS1 title it isn't graphically intensive and runs perfectly well on the DS, and suits the dual screen handheld format really well. Gameplay on one screen and the map, gun/ammo and health on the other. Tank controls and slow tense gameplay are suited to the d-pad.
They could have left it there as a simple port but they add a lot of new features that gives this classic a well needed refresh. There are 2 game modes, Classic (which is what it sounds like, the original unaltered experience) and Rebirth with features more enemies and new placements as well as randomly putting you into short first person segments when you enter certain rooms where you fend of enemies with your knife using the touch screen the slash and stab. They also revamped and added some puzzles that use the touch screen and microphone of the DS which was really cool at the time. Other extras include some new costumes and a multi-player mode I never got to try that requires both players have a copy of the game, I never knew anyone else who played it at the time, but it looks fun.
Overall this is my favourite way to play the original, it's great to pick up and play anywhere as well on the DS, especially on a 3DSXL with the larger screens and a bit more power so it all runs smooth. If you're a fan of the original, it's an easy recommendation. If you are new into the series, it's still at it's core an early PS1 game and may not stand up for a modern audience.
