5/5 ★ – SlyLink's review of Tormented Souls.
Tormented Souls is a perfect love letter to old school survival horror. The Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark and Silent Hill inspirations are abundant throughout, more so Silent Hill, as the game really helps to fill the void void left by Konami's now lackluster IP that hasn't had a good entry in years.
Everything from the classic tank controls and combat, incredibly creative camera angles, and an array of puzzles that actually require some thinking are done perfectly and capture that feeling of a b-movie style horror game. The acting as a bit cheesy but not terrible, the plot is actually pretty good with a couple of little twists and turns.
Creature design is creative and definitely super creepy. The environment is gorgeous and the whole setting is built like a classic RE 1 mansion with lots of rooms to unlock as you progress and backtrack. Progression always feels steady as there is always an item in your inventory you haven't figured a use for yet, or a puzzle that needs solving that leads to key to a new area which has a new puzzle or a item to help with an old puzzle. It sounds like a lot but it's actually super engaging and while I finished the game in two sittings I could have easily done it in one if I didn't force myself to stop playing.
Completion time is about 8-12 hours, speaking from my own playthrough and watching some streamers. It all depends on how quickly you solve puzzles, how much you explore and how often you die. There are some optional moments and three endings to unlock, so there is quite a bit to offer.
I find it hard to say anything bad about the game. There were a couple of glitches at launch which the devs already patched out as well as patched in some quality of life improvements based on streamer feedback which is really nice. The devs seem to be quite active and looking at player feedback and hopefully they will support the game further with more patches for some of the minor translation errors and maybe even some DLC? The only part I found the game lacking in was unlockables. The trophies encourage you to challenge yourself and get all the endings, collectables and even speedrun and no damage or save runs. But at the end of it all there are no cool costumes, unlockable weapons or infinite ammo etc something that is usually prevalent in games like RE, AitD and SH.
Overall though this game is still incredible and the dev team clearly has a passion for the genre and I would love to see more games from them.
From the classic violence and gore warning to the third ending credits rolling I had an absolute blast with game and cannot recommend it enough if you're into classic survival horror.
