1.5/5 ★ – SlyLink's review of XIII.

The original is a bit of a cult classic now, I was very surprised to see the remake pop up on Amazon one day, after seeing zero advertising for it. Unfortunately they messed up this one, and badly. The comic book art style doesn't look as good as the originals cell shaded look, which at the time was very unique. The voice acting is the only redeeming quality, however that's because they reused the original recordings. I have a theory this game was made as cheaply and quickly as possible using the original code and wireframe models with a new coat of paint. It feels like a PS2 game with marginal improvements. The animations are atrocious, when picking door locks a generic animation plays that doesn't line up with the lock, enemy movements are rigid and the death animation doesn't always look like they have actually died. The controls are super clunky, mainly the weapon wheel which often doesn't recognise I've switched weapons or switches to the wrong one. The melee hitboxes are dreadful. You can pick up a chair and stand face to face with an enemy, hit them, the chair will break as if contact was made, but you actually missed? There is a constant horizontal screen tear when you look left and right. The frame rate drops often. I've seen a few texture bugs; water not loading in properly, a weird line on the skybox on one level that looks like Dev tool to mark the outline of the mountain range in the distance? Often the audio will bug out, guns fire with no noise, sound effects crackle and voicelines cut out half way through. The only way to fix is to close out of the game. The publisher and developer have apologiesed for the state of the game and are looking to patch it up. As a side note, not related to the quality of the game; the only version available to purchase is a steel book, which is actually really nice, however the cherry on top to this disaster of a game, mine came with a big old dint in the top corner. Oh and one of the trophies has a spelling error: "Swings from a grappling hoock to another 3 times"
