5/5 ★ – SoftWinters's review of Devil May Cry 5.
A decent game carried by an amazing ending. The start of the game was fun, but there was a lot of things I didn't and quite honestly still don't jive with. Firstly, I find the photo-realism approach in its art direction to not really land with me. The presentation of the game is decent, but I feel it isn't as interesting as some other entries (especially Devil May Cry 4). Another reason this could be is the use of a completely free camera the player controls themself. In big, open areas this isn't as much of an issue because you can thankfully pull the camera from the character a ton, but this also can be a bit messy in tight corridors. I never really liked having to switch from the face buttons to the joystick because even though it lasts a little under a second, it can really ruin the flow and feeling of a high style combo. I also found the game way too easy on the normal difficulty. I would've bumped it up, but I was on the hardest difficulty I had access too. This has been a notable progression of the series as after Devil May Cry 3, the games kept getting easier, but this is the first point where I felt it became a bit too easy for myself. I don't need the series to reach the same height of difficulty as the third entry, but I wish they kept it at the tone found within the fourth game.
Despite my long paragraph of issues, these are smaller complaints and definitely don't keep it from being a good or even great game, but it does stick out more to me as I played all these games back to back. The thing that saved it is the amazing ending. I really love the characters within the series (except that DmC reboot) and have grown very attached to them. This is a major climax to what the entire series has done up to now and it is a very good one at that. I won't go into spoilers, but Nero's story was so so good. I feel the only complaint I would have here is I wish there was more Lady and Trish, but that isn't too big of a problem. Great game and wonderful series! I always knew I would like these games, but I never expected to get into them this hard. Time for the anime and manga next!
