3.5/5 ★ – Spelix's review of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe.
Play time: 2 h
Platform: PS5
Completion: Main ending, some of the other endings, most of the deluxe content (but only a few of the deluxe endings)
Got this game through PS+ Essentials and seemed like a good game to play in one sitting this sunny Saturday morning.
I've heard quite a bit about this game ever since it originally came out, and I am a huge fan of Davey Wreden's other game, The Beginner's Guide, so I was excited to finally dive deep into this one.
And I mostly liked it, the dialogue is really good, it is laugh out loud funny at times and it just feels really clever. The new Deluxe content is really good as well, although a bit too full of itself at times I think.
My problem with the game is that it's almost a rouge-like in structure, you run through the game and try different paths to end up in various endings and then you are put back at the start, to start a new run so to speak. And that's really cool for maybe the first five endings, but after that it became a bit tedious to hear so much of the same dialogue repeated over again, in the hope of finding something new. Compared to a game like Hades, the gameplay doesn't really change with each run, so it just becomes a bit repetetive after a while.
And that's when I decided I was done with the game, I had my fun, found some cool endings but wasn't really interested in finding more, even though I risk missing out on some cool other stuff.
But for a 2 hour game I got with a subscription, I think it was time well spent. Now onto the next adventure!
