2.5/5 ★ – Spongyoshi's review of Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge.

After the success of the Mega Man series on home consoles, the next challenge for Capcom is to bring the Blue Bomber to the handheld market with a new title for Game Boy loosely based off the first game! Will this experience be a success for the franchise? Time to find out! First disappointment, only four of the six robot masters made the cut in this title, Bomb Man and Guts Man didn't make it in this portable version. However, as a good surprise, the stages themselves are totally different to their NES counterparts. While they all use relatively similar themes, the stages are totally different to the original game and it's definitely not a port of the original title but a completly new game! Although it is a shame it's reusing mostly the same enemies and weapons but I do really enjoy having brand new stages with their own gimmicks for that entry. Even the soundtrack is original with even totally new remixes for the themes of Cut Man, Ice Man, Heat Man and Elec Man! However, I'm not too fond of the controls of this game. Not only does it feel slower in general to move around and shoot, but also Mega Man has a bit of momentum to his controls compared to how he usually plays, which makes him feel less precise than on his usual titles. Kind of a shame, especially since some gimmicks include wind currents and sliding floors which makes the problem even more apparent.. Speaking of difficulty, Mega Man was always known for it's difficulty but here it's very steep, a bit too much so.. The stages feel immediately difficult and do not get any easier. Since the camera is zoomed-in for the small Game Boy screen, the stages feel easily cramped which makes avoiding enemies and projectiles even harder. Not only that but I feel like this game throws bottomless pits and deadly spikes more often than a regular Mega Man game does. And don't get me started on the bosses, they are even more messy than other Mega Man titles, I do not know if beating them damageless is even possible and their special weapons are rarely of much help, unfortunately... The last few stages after the Robot Masters have their fair share of nice surprises but the game is only 6 stages long and you can feel that they tried to make them as tediously difficult as possible to make the game feel longer than it actually is. Kind of a shame as the game isn't too bad and has reediming qualities but I can only recommend this title to die-hard Mega Man fans. If you want to get started on the franchise, definitely avoid this one, it's sadly more tedious than it is fun with badly placed checkpoints, annoyingly messy level design and not a good emphasis on weapon energy management. It still manages to be a pretty good effort on the console and can be a good time but I feel like it wanted to be difficult first and fun second which isn't the way to go...
