4/5 ★ – Spongyoshi's review of Newer Super Mario Bros. DS.

Newer DS is the successor to Newer Wii, focusing solely this time on single-player, with way less custom stuff, how does the game stands out? I won't beat around the bushes, Newer DS is amazing! The levels are super creative and so is the world! They were able to make a completly different game using mostly similar assets! First thing first, the stage are very creative. Very reminescent of SMB3, each stages use a primary gimmick, usually accompagned by a secondary one that gets used in all sorts of ways until the end. Many of the stages were full of ideas yet at the end, I usually was sad I was done with it so quickly, I just wanted a little bit more! The game uses the implemented stuff very well, you can skip some worlds and uses the items during stages (that usually feel purposely designed to work with any of them) as it doesn't change the overall structure of the game. Yet it feels like a completly new campaign with all of the new gimmicks, a new power-up and even a new final boss! This doesn't feel like New DS, this is definitely NewER DS!! Icing on the cake, brand new music and aestethics makes it a must-play for any mods fan! The platforming's difficulty usually hits just right while not feeling as baby-easy as the original New games (although World 7 feels a bit too much but it's fine) and aiming for 100% completion is a ton of fun! Fans of platforming and the Mario franchise, I can't recommend this one enough!! It's a traditionnal Mario game done right!!
