2.5/5 ★ – Spongyoshi's review of SpongeBob's Boating Bash.

Spongebob getting his own wacky racing game? Well that sounds like a no-brainer! Let's see how this game handles the idea!! The game over 6 different gameplay styles which is honestly pretty refreshing! It has quite the number of unlockables as well but only a quite simple story mode consisting of many missions and a single-play mode (alone or multiplayer) which is a bit disappointing but the game still has quite the bunch of content! The story is... more fledged-out than you could think with many cutscenes about a shady shark teaching Spongebob how to D.R.I.V.E. (A.K.A. Demolish the other racers' vehicules) and many character will join into his charade and the conclusion was surprisingly satisfying and fun! If nothing else, the story was rather entertaining to follow! All the modes use the same engine tweaked, you race the car of your choice and have to demolish others while protecting yours. To keep brief, there's racing, pushing others out of the stage, one where you steal other racers' parts, pure demolition, mix of demolition and racing and some sort of survival mode. It's not AS varied as it sounds but there's a bunch of different arenas, cars & characters which makes the game rather varied in the end! The engine itself isn't the best however, not all impacts feel... impactful, especially on the sides and it can feel jarring at times especially when trying to push others off an edge where it'll go super easily from the front or back but be near-impossible from the side. Also, trying to aim for a target can be rather annoying and especially racing, since the tracks are small, trying to get back to face the correct way can get irritating and not to mention the drifting being useful but very hard to not spin-out with. Overall, the game is kinda cool & sorta unique and an interesting experience! The controls themselves however don't quite live up to the different modes presented and that's kind of a shame cuz the idea is honestly not too bad! The difficulty can sometimes be a bit too annoying as well with those rather imprecise controls. It would definitely be more fun with other players however but this isn't a racing game that'll keep you entertained for days & days but more like a little fun game to experience something interesting with a cute little plotline. I would only recommend it if the concept and plot interest you.
