4/5 ★ – Standingonrocks's review of 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors.
It's entirely a visual novel with some puzzles interspersed. As I'm a complete moron when it comes to number, by the back half of the story I just used a walkthrough for any of the number puzzles. This made the story flow better and overall just a better experience.
So yea, the story is the main reason you want to play this, and for the most part it's great. Engaging, mysterious, quick moving, and overall exciting. I think the characters are a bit tropey and the dialogue can be repetitive, but still it wasn't too bad.
The "true" ending brings everything together in a compelling enough way, even if I'd say it leaves some pretty big plot holes. My biggest complaint is that I ended up getting this main ending as my 2nd ending, which took away a lot of the effect of the other endings.
Still, it's hard not enjoy something this off the walls crazy. I played the Remastered version on Steam. While I think the DS would be a better fit for the story, at least in the newer version you can just jump to sections you want. It makes traversing the story much more manageable, at the cost of really driving home the story.
Trade offs, but I'd rather take the shortened time and QOL changes for a story that's delivered slightly worse.
