3.5/5 ★ – Standingonrocks's review of Inscryption.
I think I wanted to love Inscryption so much more than I actually did. The concept is cool and there is a meta narrative that's pretty engaging and fun. Honestly, the meta "story" is the most interesting part of the game to me.
The gameplay was alright. I found it frequently grating where I'd get stuck in unfun gameplay loops I had to repeat continually to make progress in the game. It led to the point that by the end of the game I had little interest in doing Kaycee's mod and achievement hunting. There's a basic card game in there, but it just seems like the game has the complete ability to screw you over without warning or recourse at any time. This is similar to Balatro, but it felt particularly unfun to me here. I also didn't particularly care for how the mechanics of the game shift quite frequently.
Besides that it's a well put together and well designed package. The art and music is top notch. The story and narrative is engaging, although I could have gotten the same experience reading the wikipedia page.
All in all it's good. I don't think great, but good.
