4/5 ★ – SuperSonicHeros's review of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.
While the game had such a mixed reception with many fans not really liking it, I have to say that this game is honestly great in my opinion. Story is decent. Some stuff I really like, some stuff I really didn't. It's flawed but very decent. This is definitely the best looking game in the series in terms of both graphics and art direction. The game really looks so good in each area in each time period. The in game cutscenes are animated so good. Which is a big improvement over the other games. Even the 2D cutscenes are animated so well and look very good. Voice acting is done very well. Gameplay is very fun. Even though I prefer how the gameplay and missions were handled in 2 and 3, it still is very fun. Each Cooper ancestors are very interesting and have their own abilities. Villains are pretty alright. The disguises for Sly is very good and utilized well.
Okay now for the flaws. There are some stuff that I have issues with in the story. And I know what you guys were waiting for, and yeah, Penelope. Before I first played this game back in 2021 I heard how a lot of people really hate how Penelope was handled. And since I replayed the game right now, yeah I still think what they did with her is very stupid. Even the reasoning for her is just really stupid. I enjoy some of the dialogue for the characters, but some well... can be kinda well... annoying. Like Sly quipping like there's no tomorrow. While Sly does quip in the other games, it isn't like as frequent as here. And some of his quips are just unfunny and annoying. Some of Murray's dialogue can be resort to just food jokes. When has Murray ever done this? It would've been fine if it was like 3 times. But it was a lot and it's just annoying. I also wished the story wasn't rushed. The bosses are honestly a downgrade. Especially with the final boss while I will talk about in a minute. They aren't really bad, but that they can be kinda annoying to go through. Just wish that the bosses were like with Panda King in the first game and the bosses in Sly 2 and 3. Like for Penelope's dragon. Miss Decibel is definitely the best boss because her boss fight was more interesting. Le Paradox. Yeah he's the weakest villain in the series. He's just okay. But man why is his boss fight just QTEs. Like why? It's just very dumb. Also I wished Carmelita would've had more missions instead of only being playable just one time or just not even being playable at all in each episode. Just give her more jobs.
Despite the problems I had with Thieves in Time, I think it's a very good game. While it's story is decent, gameplay really carries it. Sanzaru Games honestly did a good job with Sly Cooper I must say. Definitely overhated in my opinion.
