4/5 ★ – Supergamerguy's review of Nightmare Kart.
This game is seriously broken: collision issues (both NPC and environmental), broken AI pathfinding, and even movement that grinds to a complete halt when holding the acceleration button after a cutscene. The boss fights in particular are a real pain, and while they're quite inventive for a kart racer (boss arenas, capture the flag arenas, and even a puzzle stage), they're either over in 3 minutes (if you know how to exploit them) or take 20 minutes at least (looking at you Father Gregory). Don't even get me started on the numerous auto-targeting errors in the secret boss's first phase. I can't count how many times I fell into the abyss because the sword attack just *would not* lock onto an enemy on another platform.
Despite all that, this game is just plain fun. The visuals and music are the real draw here, with the former being the perfect homage to the 32-bit console era, complete with pixelated texture patterns and tricky CRT effects. The latter is yet another fantastic work by Evelyn, who seems to never miss with any music released. The gameplay is pretty solid too, with some nice additions that I didn't expect to spice up the kart racer formula. The ability to store boosts was odd at first, but it really helps out when hit by an item or hitting a wall. I also thought power braking was going to be useless, but it turned out to be incredibly handy for making (up to) 360 degree turns in the battle modes! Everything else was your typical kart racer fare, and it was done fairly well overall. I managed to get five hours out of it, which is more than enough for a free game!
This game is worth a play, even if you're not a fan of Souls-like games (like me). The sheer amount of love and effort put into this project is evident in every aspect of a playthrough, which is worth the half-a-gigabyte storage size and less than five minutes of your time for an installation. Here's hoping there's a proper Bloodborne mod in the future, as well as some much needed online multiplayer!!!
