3.5/5 ★ – Sweep_boi's review of Dragon Warrior III.

~ Played through the Switch/Mobile Remake ~ Dragon Quest 3 is an extremely fascinating Game. It's a bit mind blowing how well a 1988 NES RPG holds up today, like this game introduced MANY of the systems and Mechanics we see in modern turned-based RPGS today. The structure of Dragon Quest 3 is pretty great too, it's so much fun to explore around and progress throughout the game's story. Finding random collectibles like Mini Medals and other items are also really fun and satisfactory. The best thing I can say about Dragon Quest 3 is the amount of freedom it gives to the player, you can freely customize your party in any way you want. Wanna have a party of only mages? Go for it. Heck, you can even play the entire game solo with only the Hero if you want. Even if you reset your Class, you get to keep every single one of your learned spells which is awesome. The game wants you to constantly experiment tossing you different books and accessories that change personalities and stats and its all bloody fantastic. All of this makes it sound like Dragon Quest 3 is a top tier RPG right? Ehhhhhhhhh... Easily the worst thing about Dragon Quest 3 is the EXTREMELY FUCKING SLOW LEVELING UP. It is somehow even worse than Dragon Quest 2!!! It's not as bad throughout the first half of the game, but it later becomes impossible to level up even once in under 3 hours. And whats worse is that this slow leveling makes building your perfect party even worse, since your party member goes back to level 1 when you reset their class. This one problem is so bad that it literally almost made me want to quit during endgame, but i powered along. Also Fuck Xenlon and his stupid abomination of a tower, that shit alone lowers it a star. Honestly if it wasn't for the slow leveling system, i would've easily given this a 4.5. But unfortunately, that isn't the case :( Thankfully though the HD-2D remake is coming and that looks amazing. If it makes it easier to level up faster and had some Quality of life changes, that version will be a 5/5 masterpiece. Overall 3.5/5. I recommend playing this game as it is (mostly) awesome, but waiting for the HD-2D remake is probably the better idea since it will 100% fix this game's issues.
