3.5/5 ★ – SyIens's review of Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Arkham Asylum’s biggest draw is simply the fact that you can play as Batman. And as a 2009 game, they did a good job in making the combat work. Although occasionally frustrating since I was on hard difficulty, beating up bad guys was always fun (Batman doesn’t kill but he definitely hospitalizes. Speaking of which, the recent episode of Peacemaker discussed this to a comedic effect about how Batman has indirectly killed thousands because he lets the bad guys live, who then kill more innocent people. If Joker’s plan worked and the Titan Venom got out into Gotham, all of those deaths are 100% Batman’s fault lol)
Tangent aside, the boss fights ranged from pretty good to laughably bad. Bane/the titan henchmen were fun to fight, but got repetitive after a while. Poison Ivy’s fight felt like it came out of Returnal, and I mean that in the best way possible. The Scarecrow and Croc parts were really well done. The bad one was the final Joker fight, you don’t even fight him and him becoming the Abomination from Hulk was a little silly. Although, it was satisfying, as I made it to the 3rd stage of that fight with almost no health, and I played a perfect 3-5 minutes to beat the very last part of the game
The story isn’t that deep, especially considering that it takes place on an island and canonically takes place over the course of a couple hours. And they were really stretching it thin by the end. But the Titan Venom plot was a good enough way to get many classic Batman villains involved. And despite the fact that there’s literally 0 character development or anything, the voice actors and the portrayals of the characters were really good
The remaster looked good. Arkham Island was a good setting, albeit restrictive and cramped at times.
Kinda going back and forth between a 7 and 8 out of 10. But either way, I’m excited to start City next
Edit: 7 out of 10 because it’s a Batman game and you don’t drive the Batmobile. And the stealth controls were frustrating at times
