2.5/5 ★ – TNGLiam's review of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - Special Episode.

Platform: Nintendo Switch Time Played: ~4 hours Status: Completed For an eight dollar DLC pack, this was not worth it. Ten of the eighteen levels from the Special Episode are just re-used levels from the base game with new gimmicks added in. These two new gimmicks being Crwon Capture and Ghost Spotting. Crown Capture requires you to collect five crown pieces before being able to collect the final crown; and Ghost Spotting are levels where you utilize a Double Cherry to defeat every Boo in the level, as two flashlights shining on them at once defeats them instantly. These levels honestly wouldn't be a problem if they didn't take up more than half of the package, as they can honestly be quite fun, with Boo Spotting being the better of the two in my opinion. The eShop listing for the game acted as a warning, as I could tell that some of the preview screenshots were from levels from the base game, some of which weren't even re-used in the actual DLC, so why were they on the eShop page? That really leaves us with only six new, original levels in this DLC, not counting Wingo's Double Trouble, as that is also technically re-used from the base game, along with Chaos in the Grand Labyrinth as it is just a simplified Mummy-Me Maze Forever where you can't allow the Toad Brigade to get hit. Now while these six new levels are entirely* original, they're still not that great to begin with. Some of them are incredibly tricky of confusing, or insanely easy and short; with Spinning Starmaze being the worst and Cocoa Meltdown being the best, in my opinion. Cocoa Meltdown was the level I was most excited about the begin with, as it seemed like somewhat of a callback to Sweet Sweet Galaxy from, of course, Super Mario Galaxy. All in all, this DLC is not at all worth it, and you can already tell based on Nintendo's business practices that it will never go on sale, so there's no real point in buying it other than having the "complete" Captain Toad: Treasure Tacker experience. Don't buy this.
