3.5/5 ★ – TNGLiam's review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game - Complete Edition.
I watched the movie and proceeded to read the comics in preparation to play this game, knowing full well the absolute love for this game I've heard from players who played this game on PS3 before its removal from the PlayStation Store. So of course when it was announced that Ubisoft would be releasing the game on modern platforms in a "Complete Edition", I was ecstatic and excited to finally play what I thought I was missing out on for so long. But the closer and closer I got to finally playing the game, I heard whispers of this game's lack of polish due to rushed development, and the fact that the re-release did nothing to fix any pre-existing issues. And boy were they right.
This game is in dire need of polish. Dire, dire need. Sometimes progression forwards in a level is seemingly haltered due to enemies sticking around just off screen enough not to be seen, requiring the player to walk to the side of the screen and deal with the enemies that can't even be seen, just to move forward at all. Another issue was entering and leaving shops sometimes didn't work, it was just trial and error sometimes trying to hit the load spot. Same thing with talking to shop owners, as the prompt wouldn't appear sometimes.
Besides the game literally dry heaving due to it's need for polish, this game is considerably fun! The graphics are great, being extremely polished and clean, with gameplay also being rewarding and fun to perform.
It would have been better to know a lot of information regarding the game beforehand, like the existence of shops to restore health and lives in between levels, along with allowing you to increase your stats, as I was finding the game incredibly difficult before knowing about the shops. This could also be simply explained by this being my first side-scrolling beat-em-up game besides Castle Crashers.
The soundtrack for this game also slaps incredibly hard, which I know a lot of people love dearly, and rightfully so, as the music fits the game really well, while also just being great music in general.
The game throws in a lot of cameo characters from the comics, as the game is more so based on them than the movie, which is understandable due to the game being developed before the film's release. But reading the original black and white pages made it hard to figure out which characters were which. Not to mention that all the female characters have unnecessary boob jiggles, which just made me question more than laugh, which I assume was the intention, because even Knives' friend who is seventeen years old has these jiggling breasts... Yeah...
Regardless, this game is a fun time, especially with friends, almost to the point where I'd only really want to play this game if I had other people to play it with. Which makes it harder to know that the online for this game sucks. I know the development for the original was rushed so I won't harp on it too much, but they could've at least fixed it up a bit for the new release.
Check it out if you so wish! Especially if it's on sale!!
