4/5 ★ – TehSorceror's review of Psychonauts.

As a massive fan of 3d platformers I am surprised I have gone this long without playing this game which has been sitting in my steam library for years. For a game that came out in the ps2 era it still holds up fairly well with some of the most inventive worlds to explore. The premise of going into minds is perfect for this kind of game because it allows the developers to create many different settings, some of my favorites were the level that you essentially entered a board game, the kaiju based city destruction level, and of course the milkman conspiracy level. The voice acting is also great especially raz's voice actor who is known for playing zim in invader zim. While I generally have nothing but praise for the level design, music, and setting, there are still some issues I had which hold back this game a bit. The gameplay in general is a bit dated and can feel pretty janky at times, especially the combat, it was servicable but dont expect fluid control like in mario games. The figment collectibles also are annoying to find and really require using a guide if you want to get them all. Finally the hugest issue I have with the game is that there are multiple missable upgrades/achievements which means you cannot 100% the game if you arent using a guide. This is generally poor design for a collectathon platformer so I would reccommend not going for a 100% playthrough on a first playthrough. I hope the issues I had get fixed in its sequel because otherwise it has become one of my favorite 3d platformers.
