5/5 ★ – Thayne's review of Undertale.
"𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮."
I've had this game as one of my favorites of all time for a while now, and admittedly, I felt like it should be up there out of obligation. My ex-friend introduced me to this game in 2017, and it was something completely new to me, because I never played any games as shocking, emotional, and hilarious as Undertale before then.
Going back to it on my own in 2023, I enjoyed playing the games, but it felt like one of those autism/adhd things where I can like a piece of fiction, but it's hard for me to be as emotionally invested as I was the first time or really laugh as much as I did on previous viewings.
It wasn't until I finally finished Deltarune Chapter 2 (on a Weird Route no less because I didn't think I'd beat Spamton riding the bus home lmao) that I got obsessed with Deltarune and started to go back through my thoughts on Undertale.
It wasn't until I went through Chapters 3 & 4 on stream that I read out all of the dialogue and realized it made me a lot more emotionally invested in the game, so I decided to go ahead and replay Undertale with that mindset, and it did a whole lot to get me fully invested in the game.
I was originally only really planning on playing Undertale and Deltarune for a Deltarune video, as well as something else that will be coming out later this month or the next, and I think this playthrough has gotten me to think more about the game and really try to process more how I felt about it.
I have 28 hours, 55 minutes, and 44 fucking seconds of footage where I played the game, dozed off, and did all of the Papyrus and Undyne calls, PLUS I deleted my save file out of anxiety and ended up having to play the entire game again (didn't record that), and I'm going to make that mean something goddamn it.
Sorry if this review is really weird, by the way. I'm still learning how to be meaningfully constructive with my reviews and convey how I feel or what I think, and I have a lot of what I want to say on the game, but it's all still very liquid in my brain, and I think I might need more time to fully process everything, but I want to at least put something out there right now... also I started the Genocide Route so maybe that will be when I try to write a more comphrensible review!
