2.5/5 ★ – TheCriticalPandaBoi's review of Outlast: Whistleblower.
I don’t often play DLC for games, most of the time they don’t add anything to the overall experience of the main game or any kind of story expansions but I wanted to give The Whistleblower DLC a chance because I wanted to prove my manly hood and play every single piece of Outlast content there is and that includes this DLC.
So what did I think? I thought it was just fine. It’s pretty much just more Outlast which is what you’d expect from a DLC so it’s not exactly a major complaint?
It’s Outlast’s objective to be scary and scare/unsettle you and yeah it’s scary I guess, I don’t think it’s top tier scare you silly but it’s definitely got very affective jump scares, but I do kinda wanna refrain from calling this scary, it definitely gets scarier the further you venture into the DLC so I can’t say it’s not at all scary either.
There’s nothing much that this game does that’s better or worse than the main game so don’t expect this review to be very long by the way!
A thing they definitely improve upon this time around is the protagonist that we follow, Waylon Park is a way more interesting protagonist to follow and I’m not really a hater on Miles Upsher but I feel like it’s interesting to see someone from the inside and being the person to fuck up this whole operation instead of… being a moron and exploring asylums that clearly has something wrong with it.
I do also like how the tiny little bit of connection Waylon actually has to Miles, he sent the email as an anonymous source to essentially kick the plot off at the beginning of the main game, it was nice!
The other antagonists in the DLC, like the new ones are not as good as big chungus in the main game who makes a brief appearance in this DLC but I’m not going to lie, this DLC probably has my favourite antagonist in the DLC, The Groom, that man is the only person in this game that had a presence from the very beginning before he was experimented on, and by the time he finds Waylon again, he’s truly unsettling and shook and it was probably the only time that I properly felt like I was having a new experience with the Outlast IP that ACTUALLY felt like Outlast.
To be honest, I’m aware that you can exactly spew away from the status quo of the regular gameplay, but it does not make any sort of sense to me narratively why Waylon should have the camera, that felt pretty forced and I’m aware that it’s a nitpick but gosh darn it, I just think it’s because we need to have a camera in Outlast.
I think it’s kinda neat that Waylon’s story is going from the bottom of the laboratory to go all the way back up to the front door to the asylum compared to Miles going from top to bottom.
If you couldn’t tell, I’m struggling to find things to say about this, I don’t hate it but I wouldn’t really play it again?
Overall, Outlast: The Whistleblower DLC is a very passable expansion of the main game, it’s worth playing for a quick 2 hour experience to get scared but other than that then I just recommend finding another game in general.
