0.5/5 ★ – TheHBJK's review of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake.
3 hours long but god it’s one of the most painfully boring and tedious games I’ve ever played. The director (Josef Fares) has went on after this game to make some of my favourite coop games ever, and Split Fiction in particular is perfect, but this game is nothing but a bunch of cool concepts that are executed in the most boring way possible.
The gameplay is fucking atrocious, the control scheme when you’re playing coop is terrible, the world is ugly and hurts my eyes, and the emotional beats don’t hit at all.
And one of the biggest crimes of this game is the fact that it’s in a different language, yet it doesn’t contain an option for any dubs or subtitles? It’s such a bizarre exclusion considering the fact that me and my fiancée played the fucking remake, which should be the definite version that doesn’t overlook things like this. It makes it so you just have to infer what’s happening, which would be fine if the game was good at showing you the story, which it’s not. I understood what was happening but it wasn’t interesting in the slightest and the fact that they were speaking a real language and I wasn’t able to understand it due to the lack of accessibility options angered me.
Josef Fares is a mastermind and I think It Takes Two is fantastic & that Split Fiction is one of the best pieces of media I’ve ever experienced, but god this was a ROUGH start. Hazelight studios will go on to make more incredible games but this game is being left behind in everyone’s memories and rightfully so.
