3.5/5 ★ – ThumbsMckenzie's review of Boyfriend Dungeon.
Dating sim meets rogue like in this strange mish mash that works out pretty well. You play a character that stays in their cousin's old apartment for the summer, meeting new people and using some of them as weapons in various dungeons they must explore in order to self reflect........yep, that's not made up.
The game is weird, without question. This is a world where people can turn into weapons. If that is too weird for you, the rest of this game just won't be for you. The uniqueness was one I wasn't sure about in terms of whether the two styles would gel but Boyfriend Dungeon does a good job of making them work pretty well with one another. There are some interesting ideas stuffed into this and it's got some charm to it as well which helps cover up some of the blemishes.
It's certainly not perfect, both the dating sim aspects and the dungeon crawling rogue-like stuff are both incredibly basic and simple but there's enough weirdness to it all that it works and the controls are pretty solid and responsive which helps for the dungeon aspects of this game.
The game allows a fair amount of character customization and does allow you to pick your preferred gender and pronouns. On top of that, the characters you can pursue are also a range of people, so if you want to play as a man that dates men, you can do that, if you want to be non-binary and date a woman, you can do that, if you don't want to date anyone you can just be friends with the characters as well. There's even a cat that you can befriend if you want to ignore human beings altogether.
The stories involving the multiple characters aren't all that interesting or deep but they are a nice distraction from the dungeon crawling portion of this game. Same with the over arcing story of the game.
The rogue-like aspects of this game are also pretty standard and nothing that deep. You have a quick attack, a longer heavier attack, a dodge and the ability to use food or a magic attack. The dungeon parts are pretty easy, I died a few times in each area but when I did die, I'd normally level up enough and improve a few weapons to the point where my next run would get me through the part that killed me without much issue.
Bosses are the same, not very hard. Died once on a few but would get through it and beat it the second time around without issue.
Overall, Boyfriend Dungeon is a chill dating sim/dungeon crawler type game. If you are looking for something a little different and like one of these genres, you may end up enjoying this game, though with how surface level some aspects of this game are, you may find it to be okay at best. It's a relatively short game and a Game Pass release so if the idea of a dating rogue like confuses you to the point where you need to see how that works, give it a shot.
