4/5 ★ – ThumbsMckenzie's review of Unpacking.
So chill, so zen, and so much heart. I had heard things about Unpacking and its ability to tell the story by simply unpacking boxes and I was not disappointed by that at all.
Whether its a new space, an item you've had to unpack before, or even new items, everything is serving towards the story of your character and their journey through life; the first bedroom, you dorm room, the first apartment, and much more. It's really effective and works to near perfection.
Really Unpacking's biggest flaws are a few gameplay mechanics. First, there's no way of pushing for more information on an item. Usually you can tell pretty easily what something is by just looking at it but there were a few times where I couldn't for the life of me figure out what I had just picked up or where it needed to go. So I would just keep putting it places until the game told me I was right. Just wish I could push a button and have it tell me exactly what I was holding.
The placement restrictions are also a bit annoying. I get requiring that you can't just put your utensils in the bathtub (unfortunately) but little things like your diary not being allowed on your desk in the first level or not being able to put a rubber ducky in a bathtub, it's just a bit too restrictive in what it is doing and where it is suggesting you place things, especially when you don't have the ability to get specifics on what an item actually is.
Besides that though, Unpacking is super chill, super cozy and very sweet. It doesn't take long to beat, a few hours tops, so it's a great weekend game. If you have Game Pass, give it a shot, it's delightful.
