3.5/5 ★ – TitanGiuls's review of Star Wars: Squadrons.
[Played single-player story only.]
I was wondering how a Star Wars game could be priced below the typical full price. Now that I played it, I get it now... production values do seem scaled back. Character models and some animations aren't excellent.
Speaking of characters, I also didn't become attached to any person here aside from the two leads Kerrill and Javes. I liked their tension even though we only ever see them together for a short time but I think it was enough to set-up their relationship context. I particularly loved the voice and acting of Kerrill. If I had any favorites, it would be her.
The core of the gameplay -- the flying/dogfighting -- is very competent (even on controller) and can be scaled to become easier or more challenging. I didn't take advantage of the loadout system until later in the game because the ship parts don't seem appealing or I feel sacrifice too much.
I fully appreciate these sub-10 hour linear stories. 'Squadrons' told a pretty compact, digestible, satisfying story about protecting the New Republic's secret project -- which aims to finally put it on the same technological and firepower footing as the Empire.
