3/5 ★ – Tomcar's review of Forspoken.

I was put off forspoken after Reading some not so great reviews for it, and the general perception of it as a whole. But I’m happy to say that I ended up being pleasantly surprised by the experience.the combat is a little messy, as are the controls, and we’ll just about everything, but at the same time I found moving and fighting to be a lot of fun. The game has a Magic parkour system where when you hold down a button the main character propels herself around the admittedly gorgeous environment at high speed, and seamlessly runs up walls and leaps over obstacles. Combat involves switching between different elemental magical abilities. I found it to be quite fun, like a mix of mirrors edge and modern final fantasy games. This game got a lot of flack for its Wheadon esque writing, and while there are some “well, that JUST happened!?” Moments, I ultimatley found Fay, and her sardonic side quick to be well written with some pretty great banter. The music is fantastic as well. The overall story is sort of a confusing mess, but I thought it was engaging and I was pretty invested by the end of it. Side characters outside of Fay and cuff (her side kick/bracelet) were not very interesting despite the games best efforts to get you to care about the and the menial fetch quest side quests they want you to do for them. They were easy enough to ignore and just focus on the things I enjoyed. While the game can look really nice on pc, it does suffer from some very flat lighting, as well as inconsistent performance even on a 4090 using dlss. Most areas ran fine, but one area in particular tanked my frame rate and I couldn’t figure out why as it didn’t look any different from other areas in the game. Overall despite its issues I had a good time. If you were on the fence about this but put off by the word of mouth, I’d recommend trying it out the next time it’s on sale or part of a subscription service like PlayStation plus or gamepass.
