4/5 ★ – Trapazt's review of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
Admittedly, at first, I didn’t quite comprehend why Assassin’s Creed franchise fans were so joyful when speaking of this game. However, after playing it, I understand why and have joined the bandwagon.
Edward Kenway is a protagonist I wasn’t sold on throughout the game but towards the end, I was moved. It is a relatable story of a man who wants to do better for his family though has to do it through not so honorable means, those means are being a pirate.
The historic part of the game was nailed with every pirate being featured like Benjamin Hanigold, Charles Vane and Edward “Blackbeard”Thatch. My favorite is without a doubt Blackbeard though I do prefer the Pirates of the Caribbean adaption.
Where this entry fails, sadly, is the amount of tailing missions. Previous and future titles of this franchise have these missions but only this game really takes it too far. Furthermore, the whole franchise often does this thing where they will give you a lot of villains before taking you to the final boss. As a concept, it’s not bad at all and it’s been around since the dawn of these games. However, it becomes a burden when you do not build these villains to mean something. Personally, I grew more attached to Bartholomew Roberts as a villain for example rather than Laureano Torres, the main villain of this Assassin’s Creed entry. Future titles sadly do not rectify this and I think it’s a shame and a true issue with these games.
Overall, this game was very enjoyable and was truly a great one. I do believe it is a better game than Assassin’s Creed Unity & Origins but I still prefer Assassin’s Creed III, Syndicate & Odyssey.
Great stuff. 4/5
