1/5 ★ – Trogdon's review of Chex Quest HD.
Completely awful in nearly every way aside from the sheer novelty of such a game existing. It is hilarious there is a Chex game in the Doom engine, and it was well liked enough to get a full blown HD remake. However, this is just plain shoddy. The controls are among the worst I’ve ever played in a FPS game, and certainly nothing like Doom that it was based on. You turn left faster than you turn right, and the sensitivity settings go from glacial to impossible to aim. There’s no reason Z axis movement should be in this game. Sound effects are overly loud and repetitive, and it seems to drown out whatever music is there. Monster designs are bland and enemies have terrible AI and very repetitive attacks. The graphics are very odd, the effects are pretty nice with real time shadows and lots of screen space ambient occlusion, but the models and environments are bad. It looks simultaneously surprisingly good and also incredibly bad.
All this to say, kudos to whoever got this remade. It is definitely interesting and you can tell it’s a bit of an inside passion project. They should’ve been given a bit higher budget to make something a little more fun.
