4/5 ★ – Trogdon's review of F-Zero: GP Legend.

A solid recreation of the SNES original style gameplay, with a heaping load of content featured. In addition to the normal 4 cups of Grand Prix, there is an extensive mission mode and a Story mode featuring 8 individual storylines with 5 missions each (ranging from small events to longer races). The story mode is the meat of the content here with a focus on the GP Legend Anime, but by itself it doesn’t necessarily make a ton of sense. It’s nice to get a fleshed out understanding of the F-Zero world (especially the planet descriptions), but as a narrative it’s not incredibly interesting. Beating each character’s campaign unlocks a slightly different ending arc for each character which is nice. Don’t have much negative to say, other than the story mode gets repetitive as it doesn’t use nearly all the tracks available in Grand Prix. You’ll do the same courses as many as 4 times in the story mode despite there being 3 other alternate versions of that same track theme which is a bit annoying. Graphically the game looks impressive and the sense of speed is excellent, but the lower resolution than the SNES can make it harder to react quickly to upcoming obstacles, though you might not necessarily need to. I was able to complete this game on expert mode and all story missions, despite not being fantastic at F-Zero. The AI is not all that challenging. Music is good in the game with some nice arrangements, but the GBA audio really holds it back when comparing this to the SNES game. Sound FX are notably absent, and songs shared across the games (Mute City and Big Blue) are quite obviously scaled back in complexity and bass for the GBA iterations. Overall a great entry in the F-Zero franchise if you are a fan of the original game, but less so if you like the 3D efforts as they share little in common gameplay wise. Haven’t played the other two GBA games to compare.
