2.5/5 ★ – TylerTurner7's review of Pokkén Tournament DX.
While this game aims to be a Pokemon-Tekken game it ultimately accomplishes neither in a satisfying way. The gameplay loop is exactly what you would expect from a side scroll fighter but becomes incredibly repetitive because of the limited roster and minimal story elements. The early leagues are easy enough that you can likely spam your favorite combination of moves but it's in the last league and tournament that an unreasonable difficulty spike occurs making the pacing feel terrible. If I remember correctly, I finished the league battles with roughly a 94% win ratio and most of the losses came in the final act.
There is incredible potential in the competitive scene for there to be some complex and deep combinations but given that this is not my genre I think I will pass. There is a small story revolving around an incredibly cool looking Shadow Mewtwo that, if it had been explored more deeply, could have made the game slightly more memorable. I had to force myself to finish the relatively short campaign after completing the second of four leagues. While my Charizard and I are now Ferrum League Champions, I don’t see myself ever revising this game.
