2.5/5 ★ – Uneuro's review of The Thaumaturge.

Pros: - Very interesting historical setting (20th-century Warsaw) mixed with East-European mythology. - Thaumaturges possess cool powers that we get to use in and out of combat. - Combat skills are modular which, in combination of the different salutors we have at our disposal, allows for builds. - Support for frame-generation on day 1. - Enough content for the price. Cons: - The setting is completely underutilized. - Barely any RPG mechanic. - 90% of levelling happens by collecting documents around the map. Because of that, combat and side quests feel pointless. - Overall, the plot is on the boring side and not always clear, the lore is so much better than the story. - Static environments & NPCs. - Relatively repetitive. - Easy even on the hardest difficulty. Conclusion: The Thaumaturge feels like a waste of a great and original setting never seen before. While combat can be entertaining thanks to skill customization and dialogue can be enjoyable at times, the game starts to feel like a chore after its first half when things become more repetitive and levelling starts slowing down. The game should shift its levelling system towards side-quests, dialogue, and combat. It should also allow us to use thaumaturgy in dialogue more often for different conflict resolutions. In the end, The Thaumaturge is an average game that is probably not worth your time, especially if you are expecting a real RPG made by ex-Witcher devs.
