2.5/5 ★ – UpwardBoss's review of CrossfireX.

okay so normally I open my reviews with a long intro section where I explain whether I like the game or not and why. Not this time, let's get straight to the point. I recommend CrossfireX's campaign. I do not recommend touching CrossfireX's multiplayer. With a 200 foot barge pole. Now let's explain why. Multiplayer first. Multiplayer: CrossfireX's multiplayer is not good. The biggest issue the game has is the game only has 5 maps, and each map is tied to a specific mode. Each mode only has one map, making each mode get extremely repetitive. Who thought that was a good idea??? Before we analyze each mode, let's break down the two different styles of play, Classic and Modern. Classic has no aim down sights, no sprint, and no upgrades, similar to the original Crossfire. Modern does have the above features. Search and Destroy is the only mode available on both styles of play, Classic and Modern. It's pretty good, actually, the best mode available, and easily the most fun I had playing the multiplayer. BUT, the fact there's only one map available means that players are going to the same few strategies incredibly quickly, making matches stale already. The lack of a ranking system also means that this mode won't have any staying power compared to other competitive search and destroy shooters like CSGO, Rainbow Six Siege, and others. Team Deathmatch is the only other mode I enjoyed, although the map used is very prone to an issue where one team just gets spawn killed repeatedly, which kills the fun. Really unfortunate. Only available on Classic. Point Capture is the only mode other than Search and Destroy available on Modern (and it's only available on Modern) and it's unfortunately ruined by the "Boogieman" ultimate ability, which gives you a huge amount of health and very fast fire rate weapons. Before players start using these, the matches can be fun, but once the Boogiemen enter the battlefield, the match is ruined. The other two modes are a disaster. Spectre mode has one team cloaked (while standing still) with only knives, while the other team has their usual weapons. This *WOULD* be fun, if it wasn't so unbalanced. I only ever saw the spectres (cloaked team) win if the team that had weapons left (the way the mode works is you play 4 rounds, then switch sides, first team to win 5 rounds wins). It's incredibly unbalanced as the spectres need 3 or 4 hits with the default knives to get a kill so it's just frustrating and terrible, the entire team just gets wiped out immediately. Nano is even worse. It's essentially Infected from Call of Duty, except the infected have a HUGE amount of health, and the soldiers die in one hit. I have occasionally seen the soldiers win, but only while camping certain spots on the map where it's very difficult for the infected to reach them, as getting hit by gunfire stuns them, meaning they can essentially get stun locked. While playing fairly the infected always win. It's a terribly designed map and a terribly designed mode. The last thing is the monetization. This game allows you to buy weapons with real money, which is really scummy and something I thought we were past in gaming. In the end, despite an enjoyable Search and Destroy mode, CrossfireX's multiplayer fails due to a lack of maps, terrible modes, and bad monetization. 2.5/10. Campaign: CrossfireX's campaign fares much better. While the multiplayer was developed by Smilegate, the campaign was outsourced to Remedy Entertainment, the acclaimed studio known for Max Payne 1 & 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Break, and Control. The campaign is split into two halves, one focused on the faction known as Global Risk, and the other one known as Black List. It's much better than the multiplayer. While it's only 5 hours long, it's an enjoyable ride with solid shooting and a story that while being nonsensical at times, is still intriguing, with some classic Remedy sci-fi/mind-bending storytelling, despite some terrible dialogue. The AI is terrible though, and makes the game very easy, even on Hard difficulty. Easily the biggest weakness of the campaign. Also there's hit detection issues, particularly in the second half of the campaign, which was a little frustrating. Despite these issues though, I had a great time with the campaign, and I recommend it. 7.5/10. In the end, I recommend picking the campaign up (each side of the campaign can be purchased separately for $10 USD, or you can get the Global Risk side included in Xbox Game Pass. Alternatively you can get both as part of an "Ultimate" package which includes a battle pass in the multiplayer for $30, but I do not recommend this route), but I do not recommend touching the free-to-play multiplayer with a 200 foot barge pole. Multiplayer score: 2.5/10 Campaign score: 7.5/10 Overall score: 5/10
