VC's review of Metroid Prime Remastered.

Not terrible but not totally my thing. I really like metroidvanias and it did a lot right, but there’s a lot that could have been better or felt underdeveloped. I didn’t know the game was rushed but one day I was playing and I had the immediate realization that “yeah this was rushed.”
There was a lot of backtracking which I was expecting, but many of the times I did not know where I was going. The game would give me a marker on the map after a certain point, but I have limited time for playing games — I can’t be waiting around for some kind of direction. This is seen in the 2D Metroid games but I remember it feeling more natural. Metroid Dread, for example, had backtracking but was expertly designed to have you naturally go back to that area.
Not a fan of the heat visor, it looked terrible.
Some mechanics felt off. There were a couple of areas where it felt like the developers played through it once to make sure it worked and didn’t look back.
While it felt good getting all of the artifacts I don’t like how you had to collect them all to beat the game, it should have been an optional thing.
There were a couple of frustrating bosses but I really enjoyed the last 2 bosses. Ridley was fun and the Prime Metroid was done well.
These critiques are not to take away from the fun of the game. I enjoyed getting upgrades and exploring. Once I got the combat down it was very satisfying to take out enemies and bosses.
Glad I played through but opinion of Metroid Prime has gone down. I think I may just be a 2D guy. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond looks good but I want to see more from it, I’m hoping things are improved (they probably are but still) and that these issues aren’t present.
