4/5 ★ – Visionary_Gamer's review of Resident Evil: HD Remaster.
A game I’ve been wanting to tick of my list for a long time. I’ve been a massive fan of the resident evil series since they revived the franchise with Resident Evil 7, the subsequent 2 and 3 remakes (which forced me to go back and play the iconic original resident evil 4), Village and then the amazing 4 remake.
Side note… I got myself into a massive rabbit hole researching the Lisa Trevor story. And what a tragic, heartbreaking story.
This game felt a little different from the other RE games I’ve played. A lot less hand holding and the game has no shame in having the player run around for hours trying to figure things out. I take no shame in saying there were a couple of times I had to resort to checking a guide, which I didn’t enjoy. A minor gripe and my only one of two gripes, the other being the infuriating inventory system and the inability to discard items. The movement wasn’t great but I got used to it.
Despite the above, the game has that little something that only great games have. The want, no, the NEED to carry on. One more trip round the mansion before saving at a typewriter again. A new item creates a need to find out what it does.
The game creates that intrigue which heightens the need to carry on.
This games looks fantastic. Yes it’s has a wonderful lick of HD paint, but for GameCube graphics there is a lot to appreciate. Everything is crisp, shiny and immaculate. Character models look great.
Lighting effects are on point. The visuals come together with the sound to create a great atmosphere. The game and story itself are not that scary, but the game world felt great.
Story wise, acting wise, plot wise, it’s all very… Resident Evil. So don’t expect much in that department. But nobody is here for an immersive story.
I’m glad I finally experienced this one, and this is a key game for any Resident Evil or horror survival fan.
