4/5 ★ – WightnNerdy's review of Chasm.

Don’t get me wrong — I would prefer a fully authored Metroidvania game world 9 out of 10 times — but the randomly generated maps work surprisingly well here. I definitely got stuck a few times and had to retrace my steps to find the correct pathway forward but really, it wouldn’t be a true Metroid-like without that right? Combat and transversal are both pretty good and feel very Castlevania-adjacent, especially the way you can attack in the air and again as soon as you hit the ground. Saving villagers and repopulating the town with venders is fun and rewarding, and it’s always worth going back and using your newfound abilities to uncover secrets in previously-explored areas. There are a couple of fairly punishing difficulty spikes throughout the game but otherwise I had a lot of fun exploring Chasm’s world — or I guess I should I say, MY world.
