4/5 ★ – WightnNerdy's review of Crypt Custodian.

Crypt Custodian is a Metroid-like with a Zelda-like perspective, essentially. It still has all the common facets of the genre like unlocking new abilities, backtracking, fighting challenging bosses, etc., but there’s something fun and novel about playing a Metroidvania game that isn’t just a typical side scrolling adventure. Combat is snappy and features a Hollow Knight-adjacent badge system that can give you extra bonuses like more health or higher damage. It’s not super deep or anything, but I like how the game is challenging without having any major difficulty spikes (something that Metroidvania games can be guilty of). The bosses in particular are very fun and satisfying to defeat. It has some other nice quality-of-life features like fast travel and being able to mark things on your map. Presentation is on point too with crisp, 2D art and a nice, ambient soundtrack. It’s a great game, and I’m excited to see what this developer comes up with next.
