4/5 ★ – WightnNerdy's review of Remnant: From the Ashes.

Remnant: From the Ashes is a tough, Dark Souls-inspired 3rd person shooter / RPG hybrid with procedurally generated game worlds. Every time you start a new game you're given a random seed that determines which layout your maps will be, what kind of weapons you can find, which characters you can interact with, and which bosses you'll fight. It's a really awesome way to add replayability to what is already a really fun single player, or cooperative, shooter. I played most of Remnant with a friend, and after we had finished my campaign we hopped over to his world only to find out that his layout was fairly different than mine. For example, we fought this Cthulhu-looking tree monster (that we promptly named Tree-thulu) in my world but never found him in my buddy's game. There were also some sweet guns like a rapid-fire assault rifle that he found that I never got, and vice versa. I think the game can absolutely stand on its tight shooting, challenging gameplay, and RPG mechanics alone, but the world seeding adds a really cool dynamic to the game's structure. Remnant does have its fair share of problems though. One time my character died on the spot right after we walked into a dungeon for some reason, and various things like enemies and quests are sometimes prone to bugging out. The frame rate on consoles can be pretty bad too, and the host of an online game can get this weird lag from collecting resources in the environment. I never found these quirks to get in the way of enjoying the game though. Remnant is an engaging, challenging shooter / RPG hybrid that excels on replayability, and I had a blast playing through the game multiple times to see how each world can vary.
