2.5/5 ★ – WizardWilson's review of Resident Evil: Revelations.
I've seen it mentioned numerous times that RE: Revelations is a step back towards its survival horror roots, but seeming how at the time of the games release it had only followed Resident Evil 4 & 5, I think this is a bold statement. Sure there are moments where the tone of the original creeps in, specifically during some earlier segments exploring the Queen Zenobia. However, it mostly feels like a cartoony, action-orientated game deprived of all terror, to suggest this is more in the same vein of the original game than RE4 (perhaps even 5) is a crime.
Take the Hunters for example, in the original game and even the most recent remake of RE3, these creatures pose a genuine threat to the player, in Revelations the player can mow down a small army of them with their pistol within the first few missions of gameplay.
All of this isn't too say Revelations is a bad game, it's setting aboard a ship is very original and exciting for the series, easily being its main strength. The issue is that the game doesn't realise that this is its strength and instead adopts a broad scope, trying its best to produce a game more akin to a TV series with its episodic structure and multiple perspective linearity.
If Capcom had focused on the claustrophobic atmosphere aboard the Queen Zenobia, we could of been treated to a much more terrifying experience, instead we get a messy inconsistent cartoon of a game.
