4/5 ★ – WrathofBen's review of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!.
Fitting quite snug in the middle of the other two DKC games is Donkey Kong Country 3, starring Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong. This one feels the most polished of the 3, but has the least interesting duo. Even though I love Dixie Kong from the previous game, I didn’t love Kiddy Kong. He just felt like a dumbed down Donkey Kong. Level design was a bit lacking in this one too, with the game mostly being a breeze until the final set of missions. I did love the enemy design in this, as well as the overworld map. The music didn’t slap as much as the last two games, but it still had some memorable tracks.
This game feels like the SNES’s last big break before Nintendo went all in on the Nintendo 64. Which makes sense because Wrinkly Kong’s save cave has her playing Mario 64, and you get to hear a SNES rendition of the Peach Castle theme, which is really fun. The boss fights and more vertical levels were also other great highlights I had here to an overall pretty fun experience. I enjoyed it more than the first game, but it doesn’t quite meet the heights of DKC 2. 8/10, it’s still a really solid 2D platformer that feels enough like DKC2.
