1/5 ★ – WrathofBen's review of Medal of Honor: Heroes 2.
Welp, I found this at an antique store about a week after I said I was done with my Medal of Honor series playthrough. Funny how that works, right? Well, since this is a sequel, I have MoH: Heroes on order for my PSP, so I’ll get to that one soon. Then I’ll ACTUALLY only have 2 more games left: Infiltrator and Above and Beyond. BUT, we’re not talking about those today…
Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 is a complete dumpster fire of a game. It feels unfinished, it controls like I’m wrestling with a cat, and the story is brittle at best. I beat the game within 5 hours of playtime on the medium “Veteran” difficulty. While the previous game is exclusive to PSP, this had the fortune of releasing on PSP and the Wii. Guess which one I played? Guess whose hands are aching from using a stupid Wii Zapper all day? THIS GUY!!!
The game has two control methods: Elite and Zapper. Elite is your standard Wii Remote and Nunchuck, with many unique motions gestures, like throwing your remote in your shoulder to hold a bazooka, or tilting it left or right to adjust the zoom on your sniper scope. The Zapper limits your motion, but gives you more buttons to work with. The only problem is the motion that is left are the worst controls. Leaning pretty much makes you a bigger target than if you just walked to the left or right. And reload is so similar to the melee gesture, it’s nearly impossible to distinguish the two in the heat of the moment. If any motion control worked well for me, it was the aiming. But even then, I’d rather have an analog stick. Seriously, that Zapper cramps your hands up REAL fast.
The game is a technical nightmare, often spawning enemies directly in front or behind you in tight enclosed areas. You never have the advantage, you can never sneak on them. They are shooting at you before you even round the corner. Sometimes, enemies would just not spawn at all when I would respawn, only to start spawning later if I was stuck somewhere for a while.
There are 3 major game modes here: Campaign, Arcade and Multiplayer. I can’t speak to multiplayer, because servers are down forever. But, the case boasts 32 player multiplayer, which is really impressive for the Wii. Campaign is split into 8 missions with Lt. Berg, an OSS agent working with the Rangers to find plans for a V2 rocket (again…). And Arcade is the same missions, but on rails with unlimited ammo and shootable health packs. I gotta say, if I enjoyed the game more, I’d replay the whole thing in Arcade. But what’s here is very little to like. Arcade is totally the most fun way to play the story though.
Gunplay is mixed here, with precision weapons having the worst accuracy, but SMGs and Shotguns having the best. The standout weapons here were the MP40 and the BAR.
I don’t have much else to say really. I have a great deal of positives, but it’s GREATLY outweighed by the negatives of motion controls, gross graphics, reused music and other assets, and useless teammates. From mission one I wanted to split the disc in half, it was so frustrating to play. 2/10, gotta ice bath my hands… and finally sleep…
