4/5 ★ – Yeij's review of Soldier of Fortune.

its a good classic fps with great shooting emphasized by the thunderous booms of the weapons and the gruesome deaths of enemies paired with a boisterous soundtrack and an all-around action-packed experience. story like most retro fps games isn't anything to write home about, which is excusable when the meat of the game is the gameplay. level design is very linear, but some levels do a good job at making the level not feel too linear by returning to previous areas to enter new areas (e.g. the kosovo level). combat isn't perfect, I've encountered a weird issue where I'll slide across surfaces a bit, having little control over my movement and needing to crouch or jump to regain control. i notice this happens usually with slopes so either the game has a problem with slope collision or due to running this old game on modern hardware, my settings might be doing some weird stuff to the physics. a minor complaint as well is how the game only autosaves when starting new levels, but the game allows you to quicksave 5 times per level so its hard to complain especially with a game that's this easy. honestly that's probably my biggest complaint with the actual game, it's too easy on normal. I've never gotten below half hp and usually have full hp and armor at all times. nevertheless, even if i did seem to rant on my complaints for a bit i really cant ignore how much I'm enjoying the game. soldier of fortune is a definite classic fps that's enjoyable to play but is hard to even compare to other greats from its time such as Deus Ex, Perfect Dark, and Counter Strike. recommended to retro FPS fans, more so to those who like more linear experiences.
