3.5/5 ★ – Zimtiki's review of Kirby's Dream Land 2.
Kirby’s Dream Land 2 continues the story of Kirby, which went handheld-console-handheld again. Why? Idk. This game adds to the Kirby formula again though. Basically, as you explore the map, you’ll find collectibles (candies) that will help you progress. If you beat the game without collecting all of these, you’ll get a classic meat & potatoes ending. If you collect them all though? You’ll come face to face with a HORRIFYING final boss and you’ll get a much more satisfying ending out of it as well. It makes exploration feel MUCH more worth it. This game also introduces some of Kirby’s allies: a hamster, a bird, and a fish. Collecting any of these characters during the campaign will cause them to join you, allowing you to run, fly, or swim much faster. Sadly this DOES mean Kirby can no longer sprint alone. It slows down the game a little, but overall it doesn’t make it lose too much enjoyment.
Now the wild part is that each level (all with different amounts of sub-levels you can explore) contain a hidden piece of candy that’s necessary to complete the story. How do you get these candies? In some of the hardest, cruelest ways possible. For real, some of these things took me 45 minutes to get and made me try over and over and over again. If you can get past that though, it’ll be worth it for the wildly different ending you get. It’s a solid adventure with more meat but it’s just a little slower than the previous games.
