3.5/5 ★ – Zimtiki's review of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Super Smash bros has been a staple in the book of Nintendo since it first appeared on the N64. Now, we have Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the pinnacle of the series, with a total of 89 characters. Do you have any idea how much work it is balancing fighting game characters? Imagine doing that with EIGHTY NINE OF THEM. It’s a true feat. But is it the best in the series? I don’t think so.
Let’s look at the bad first. This game has a “story mode” called world of light, and it sucks ass. It’s forty hours of the same repetitive fights and it took me two years to beat it. It was so boring. Subspace Emissary in Brawl wasn’t perfect, but it was fun and it had some of the coolest video game cutscenes I’ve ever seen. How did they go from that… to this? This mode doesn’t even HAVE cutscenes, just an intro and an ending. Also, this game has too many anime characters. There should NOT be as many Fire Emblem characters as there are Mario characters, these franchises are NOT equals. Lastly, they got rid of trophies. Remember stickers from Brawl? Where they have powers and disappear after you use them? That’s the replacement. No descriptions, no information, just a named sticker. Nothing else. The entire point of completing old Smash games was getting the trophies. I do not care about stickers, now called “spirits,” they actually make me physically angry.
Okay… the positives. This game has been polished beyond comprehension. Every character, their moves, the levels, the music, it’s out of this world. This has to be one of the biggest celebrations of games ever made. And they put Banjo Kazooie in there!!? Shhiiiiieeettttt. It gets an extra point for that.
But aside from that, fuck Fire Emblem, fuck Xenoblade, fuck spirits, bring back trophies. If the next smash game doesn’t have trophies, I might not even buy it.
