3/5 ★ – Zimtiki's review of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

In an odd twist, Super Mario Land 3 has you playing as the previous game’s villain, Wario! This isn’t just a pallet swap though, as the game has been changed ENTIRELY to fit Wario’s brass personality! First of all, this game isn’t as much of a platformer as Mario is, as Wario has pretty poor jumping abilities. To make up for this, Wario can pick up hats that allow him to ram walls and enemies, spit fire, and fly in a straight line. He can also pick up objects and enemies and throw them as a weapon, or to solve puzzles. Due to Wario’s fatter physique, he moves much slower and strategically than Mario, making the game feel a bit sluggish at times. This game is also easy, VERY easy. Probably the easiest Mario game I’ve ever played, which I definitely found to be disappointing. Unfortunately, where Super Mario Land 2 had incredibly unique levels (especially for a Game Boy game!), Wario Land’s levels feel mostly the same: just dirt, bricks, and water. Though the levels have hidden treasure chests that will get you a better ending, the levels are too bland to make me interested in re-exploring them. After fighting the final boss, which is oddly a Genie, you’ll likely not be floored to go back and explore as the ending is pretty satisfying regardless. Now, it sounds like I’m shitting all over this game, but that’s only because I expected more. At the end of the day, this is still a polished platformer that has a good amount of levels and variety, it just could’ve been more.
