2.5/5 ★ – aarbypls's review of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Expansion Pass.

The Master Trials are, ironically, a bit better than the Champions' Ballad. Which is definitely odd as the highs of the latter are SO high but goddamn it's just structured so fucking badly. The new shrines are the best in the game, the new dungeon is the best in the game (and the only truly good one), and the new boss is the best in the game (and unfortunately the only truly good one of those as well). But the structure of this DLC is just (I'm afraid to say) rotten. A series of numbered waypoints leading to new numbered waypoints (also leading to - you guess it - new numbered waypoints; it's waypoints all the way down). I'm not sure who thought this was the direction to go for this DLC, but it kind of sums up the inherent hollowness of the game's freedom overall: 120 shrines 4 champions 4 divine beasts 4 one-hit challenges that lead to 4 shrines, that lead to 4 waypoints that lead to 3 challenges that each lead to 3 shrines BLEH jesus are we done already? How is a game so focused on exploration and the "new" still so defined by the mathematic, rigid structure of those old games? It makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills, man. You can climb up as many mountains as you want but everything is still so defined by that formula. Why is an awful mandatory stealth section detour the freshest-feeling thing in the OG game? Also the motorcycle is slightly too slow. It is what it is.
