2.5/5 ★ – atlasliddell's review of Agents of Mayhem.

Agents of Mayhem is odd. On one hand, the game has an unconventional world, a gorgeous art style, and a cartoon-inspired premise that captivates from the get-go. On the other hand, the game is consistently bogged down by repetitive gameplay, weird technical design choices, and a shaky foundation. Normally, I am one who forgives lacking execution if I enjoy the idea enough. However, Agents of Mayhem consistently frustrated me with its design choices. It attempts to replicate the gameplay of a multiplayer shooter such as Overwatch in a single player setting. In doing so, however, the game fails to capture what is good about either multiplayer or single player games. The result is a game that never fully commits to one vision, ultimately upsetting both camps it’s attempting to capture. The world is gorgeous but empty. The characters are plentiful but annoying. And the villains are captivating but leave far too soon. There’s so much that could have been amazing, and nearly all of it falls flat. Once the player accepts the game for what it is, it’s a fine time. The Gat and Kenzie DLC were great additions that I would recommend to any Saints Row fan. But unless you really want to experience the “Saints Row spin-off” (it’s not that at all) or you really love shooting, shooting, and more shooting, I can’t say I recommend this game. Agents of Mayhem has a lot of heart - and you can find it - but the wars the player must wage through to find it is a tall order to ask of even the most eager of players.
