bencarsonthe2nd's review of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Hideo kojima has said that as a wee lad he wanted to be a film maker and that sentiment has never been more evident than in this game. Cutscenes as long, sometimes even longer than 30 minutes are consistently engaging and never lose narrative cohesion. On the other side of this coin is the gameplay. For the most part it’s well designed but feels less like a stealth game at points and more like a third person shooter it’s shares similarities with peace walker (which makes the areas in this game look like the Mona Lisa of gaming) and phantom pain without the flexibility and variety. The biggest thing that factors into this is the areas which feel a tad stiff and uninteresting compared to its processors. Competent but not the most impressive thing in the series. Drebin points and the shop mechanic work and serve its purpose there’s a lot of room for improvement which mgsv makes evident I vastly prefer finding equipment around the game personally but I can’t knock it too much. Getting back to the good the boss fights are as fun as they’ve ever been and revisiting shadow Moses and fighting ocelot while in a metal gear is really something. Somehow the story of metal gear solid comes to a satisfying and conclusive end, the metal gear solid series borders cheesy and contrived but ride a fine line and never cross into those territories. It’s fun, sometimes silly while its stakes and characters can be emotionally impactful. This game has the best moments in the series like the final ocelot bossfight and the ending and I’ve never thought I’d see amazing fight choreography in the cutscenes. At one point vamp and raiden fight on a metal gear while you fight off some enemies I don’t remember what they were because it the screen was split between the fight cutscene and the gameplay. This raiden has my favorite characterization of the character. In closing: solid game amazing story and cutscenes which are some of the best in gaming.
